“Dear Sunday:
Thank you for sending us “Sentimental.” Our readers appreciated the chance to read it, but couldn’t identify XXX and for that reason we won’t be accepting it. We wish you good luck placing it elsewhere, and hope you will send another piece our way soon.

“Dear Sunday Dutro,
Thank you so much for your submission to XXX! Unfortunately, we do not have a place for your work in the issue for which we are currently reading, but we wanted you to know that your submission was read closely.
We have been fortunate to receive a large number of submissions lately, and hope you understand that we can only publish a small fraction of the material we receive.
Once again, thanks very much for your submission. We hope that you will consider submitting again in the future.
Sincerely,
XXX

“Dear Sunday,
On behalf of the staff at XXX, thank you for responding to our creative call this year. The opening and closing dates for our submission categories and contests will be posted to our website at the beginning of our next fall semester. “Dear Sunday Dutro,
We are grateful for the opportunity to read “A Powerful Shift.” Although we are unable to accept it at this time, we thank you for considering XXX as a home for your work. We are often forced to pass on pieces we admire, and we hope you keep creating.
You can sign up for our newsletter and follow us on social media to keep up to date on our submission windows, programs, and upcoming publications. In the meantime, we appreciate you trusting us with your work, and for all you contribute to contemporary literature.

“Dear Sunday Dutro,
We hope this email finds you well. Thank you for submitting “The Weight of Emptiness.” Although it doesn’t currently meet our needs, we appreciate the chance to read your work.
As writers ourselves, we know that this isn’t a pleasant email to receive. XXX’s acceptance rate is less than 5%, and genre editors read each submission. We wish you the best of luck in placing it elsewhere.

“Hi there,
Thank you so much for submitting your work to XXX! Unfortunately, it isn’t the right fit for this issue, but we are grateful you shared your writing with us and hope you’ll submit again in the future. Please know that this decision does not reflect the quality of your work, but rather a number of factors that go into putting an issue together.
Again, thank you for trusting XXX with your piece; we hope it finds the right readers soon.
All the best,
XXX”
“Dear Sunday Dutro,
Your submission has not been selected for publication on this occasion, though we were grateful for the chance to read it. XXX receives a very high volume of submissions and must let many wonderful pieces go unpublished as a result.
We wish you all the best for placing this submission elsewhere.
XXX”

None of my business, really, but are all of these literary mags? Do any of them pay enough to make them worthwhile? I have this mantra for myself which has proven true many times. If I find I'm getting shot down, it is frequently because I'm flying too low. Just a thought! Best wishes.
